Dear Trevor,
I've had no sound on my comp. for many months. When I go to Con.Panel it says no device installed.I purchased the "Driver Detective" to hopefully download a driver to repair this.It instructs to remove ATI driver from list in Add/Remove, none there.Next (alternately) it says to remove NVIDIA graphic as it's out of date. I'm scared if I remove this there'll be a blank screen.
Any dangers with this advice ? Thank you, Andrew.

andrew francis

Ahh, the wonders of Drivers and such.

My advice - go into the Device Manager and remove the audio/video drivers - don't fear a black screen. Worst case you get VGA and shocking res.

Once you reboot, it will re-install drivers, and you can choose those new ones.

Always good to get the very latest drivers from the manufacturers.

Hi Trevor,
I really appreciate your response. I tried everything you suggested without success, but you were right - it was a CODEC issue. Microsoft Support finally got back to me and had me download a CODEC from the following site: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/Codec-Pack-All-in-one.shtml
My problem was fixed, and I can now view my .mpg files with sound again.

Hi Trevor,
I recently upgraded to Office 2007 on a PC with Windows XP. Since the installation I've discovered that all my family videos play with no sound (they are .mpg files). Whether I use Real Player or Windows Media Player, the result is the same. The files play with sound on another computer that has not had the Office 2007 installed. I can still play .wmv files with the sound OK on the Office 2007 PC. Any ideas on what I need to do to fix this problem? So far Microsoft have not offered any solution. Much appreciated.

June

Sounds like what's known as a CODEC issue. The CODEC is a file that lets your player (Real or Windows) know HOW to handle the files your playing. You might need to do a windows update, office update, and also get the LATEST version of Windows Media player.

Also, maybe try it in iTunes?

Hi Trevor

I would like to know what is the ideal broadband speed to watch movies online. Is 256/64kbps would be enough.

Thanks
Izaz

Izaz , Lakemba

Not really, you need to look for something in the 2000kbps or higher, you need constant streaming bandwidth available, 256 will be a very unhappy viewing experience.

I'd bet your resolution is not set to widescreen.

Right click desktop/properties, go to settings.

Make sure you are running a widescreen resolution. 1600x900 / 1600x1024 / 1280x768 / 1280x800 or similar.

Check those mate.

Dear Trevor
Have been looking for your email address. Want to ask you a question about centre-ing my desktop background photo. Tried Control Panel, Personalise , clicking on Centre but it doesn;t respond.
I have Vista business. Do love it . Except for this nuisance. the photo and other windows are stretched across the screen of my external monitor. Not Outlook. Is there anything else I can do?
Hope you are well and happy. Warm regards, Dolly (East). xx

Dolly East , Sydney

Hi Dolly, all is well, thank you!

I will shoot you an email, but yes that is annoying some times. It all depends on your graphics card (nvidia etc), some will only allow you to run the same background on both screens.

Yours seems to allow you to make the monitors act as if they were one.

What options do you see when you right click on desktop/properties and go to settings?

What tickboxes are available?

What happens to your existing vcr unit wnen the analogue signal is turned off? If you use a set top box, how do you program the pre set vcr channels to record using timer? Will there be a release of vcr's with digital tuners? Will the vcr no longer exist to record tv ?

John Hourigan , Concord NSW

John, your existing VCR can still work, with a set top box added, but it will only be able to record at a certain time on the AV input (Set Top Box), you'll need to ensure the STB is set to the right channel!

Instead, best to upgrade to a new PVR - Hard drive based recorded, doing away with VCR entirely. OR a DVD recorder option.. Make sure it has a built in Digital Tuner!

Do you know when is the next version of MS office coming out as it does not seem worth getting 2007?

David,Wollongong

David, I'm using office 2007 now on a Windows XP and a Windows 7 Beta machine - I think its great, once you get used to the new menu systems.

I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade. As for a new version, would seem likely to happen late this year early next. But it will only be basic changes, Office 2007 was the most radical change in some time.

Do i have enough RAM?? if not, is it worth going and buying a 2 or 1 gig stick for vista?? or should i stay with XP??

thanks, daniel

Hi Trevor,

Love the show Chip for Brains, but often pull my hair out nearly every week when someone phones in wanting to know how to transfer VHS to DVD (and often then wants to go on and edit the DVD content prior to finalizing).

Your suggestion (and also Michael Richardson's) is to buy a DVD/VHS Combo. This may be ok if you just want to transfer the tape straight across with no editing at all or stopping and starting the tape at intervals to stop recording of parts that are unnecessary).

I have been using for many years a Panasonic DVD HDD recorder. (If I transfer tapes I just plug the leads into each and transfer across onto the Panasonic's hard drive).

Once on the hard drive it is then very easy to edit the content, make thumbnails, menus etc.
This way you can transfer many tapes, edit them etc and put onto a minimum number of DVD's. It has various different speeds ie: Short play, long play and a variable which will allow you to fit content onto the DVD should your project be slightly over the content size of the DVD.

It also takes RAM both single and double sided which is one of the main reasons that I use the machine - my daughter puts foxtel onto the ram for me so I can watch some of the programs. Transfers in high speed HDD to RAM.

The latest of these Panasonic DVD/HDD come with an intergrated digital tuner, 250GB HDD & HDMI.

http://www.panasonic.com.au/products/details.cfm?productID=6328

The one I use was one of the first out so it does not have the tuner in it. My Mum purchased one of the latest recently and in her 80's has no trouble using it to record (her way of recording on a tape prior to the DVD/HDDwas to set it up and press record and let the tape run its complete course. As the tv guide comes up on the screen and it is so easy to set for her to record programs from the tv, the only thing she need to know was how to add the extra minutes to the recording as the TV shows always go past the advertised time. Now when she wants to watch something that she has recorded up it comes in thumbnails with the program name underneath. So easy for her to find. Of course she can also transfer to a DVD anything she may wish to save permanently.

One other thing, I am not sure if I have ever heard mention of the HD TWIN tuner set top boxes. I use a Toshiba twin tuner which is fantastic so I can record two programs at the same time. Like the Panasonic mentioned above both have a skip function to skip past the ads and time slip as well.

Cheers
Rhonda

One extra thing. You get a much much better picture choosing a HD TV with "progressive scan", the quality is amazing and you can definitely tell the difference. Look for "1080p" not 1080i. (Take a look at the Panasonic or Sony in the progressive scan in both LCD or Plasma).
Not all stores know how to display their TV's many a time my daughter has noticed that the TV is not connected properly and once the salesman has altered the settings to the quality of the picture shows.

Let Brian know that widescreen tv does not make everyone shrink and become fat when viewed with a digital signal on widescreen. No one seems to tell him this and I am sure he is under the impression that should he ever purchase a widescreen tv that he will forever see the picture this way and have the bands top and bottom, whereas the picture fits the widescreen perfectly, unless it has been filmed in pillarbox format and even then you can usually chose not to show the bands.

Goodness I have gone on.....sorry.

Cheers
Rhonda

Dear Peter

I have a new Dell computer with Vista Home Premium on it. After using the computer for a few hours, the task bar becomes un-controllable, it blurs and double focuses, the only way to correct the problem is to go control Alt Delete and restart the computer. Then it is ok for the rest of time.

I have trend anti virus, we have used some have duty scanners from Trend, to insure I have deep viruses.

Can you please suggest a solution?

We listen to you every Thursday on 2GB with Brian and find the show very informative. Last Thursday you told a listener how to DEFRAG his computer. Would you be able to email us the procedure please. We are a couple of oldies and we are learning lots from listening to you boys.
Fay and Jim.

Fay and Jim - its SO easy.

Click START - the PROGRAMS - the ACCESSORIES - then SYSTEM tools and in that folder, you will see DISK DEFRAGMENTER.

Open that program, and let it Analise your Disk. Then it will report if you NEED defragmenting. If so, let it do its thing.

Be warned, it takes a while, so leave it to work overnight or while you are out.

Hi Trevor
Why is it that ADSL broadband can only run through a copper wire, & so you have to have a phone connection to Telstra for it to be connected. I don't have my phone with Telstra, so it's become a problem - do I switch, or think about something else, & if it's something else, what are my alternatives.
Thanks
Barbara

Barbara, as I've said, the COPPER line is maintained by Telstra, but you can have your PHONE with Optus, your ADSL with iinet and be free of Telstra if you choose - my experience with other listeners and readers has been that it can be more difficult to get fault repairs on the LINE because it takes longer to confirm the location of the fault and the party responsible.

Hi Trevor,

when Foxtel gets HD will I be able to get their HD programs with my set top box or will I need something special from Foxtel?

Regards Meg.

Meg, easy - for ANY foxtel programming you need the FOXTEL box - when you subscribe to Foxtel they come to your home to set it all up for you... easy as pie!

Hi Trevor
Love the show - I'm addicted. Why is it that to get ADSL you have to have a copper phone line, as I currently have the phone with a firm other than Telstra, and have been told I'd have to transfer back to Telstra in order to get ADSL.
Thanks
Barbara

Barbara - ease your addiction, but thank you, appreciate your kind words.

Is it TELSTRA who are telling you you need to have your phone with them to get ADSL?

If so, try someone else- the company who provide your PHONE probably do ADSL.

Bigpond are NOT the only company who provide ADSL.

Also, try Wireless too - but it is certainly more expensive than ADSL.

Thanks heaps if you can help.

Terry, do you have a WIDESCREEN monitor?

That might be the reason.... For Widescreen you need different settings.

Also, what program are you viewing those photos? That might also play a part.

Trevor, for your info.

There exists a conflict between Lavasoft AdAware 2007 and Microsoft Windows Live Care. This came to light when the 28 Jan for the latter was applied. Symptom shows to remove AdAware when running Windows Live Care.

This message should be ignored. Lavasoft and Microsoft are at present in negotiations as to how to fix it.

I suggest you check Lavasoft home page for updates on this.

Trevor,

With the digital set top box for the analogue tv, do you need to buy an antenna to put on the tv or do I need someone to connect it to the outside antenna. The reason I ask, I haven't purchased anything yet, but someone told me I would have to buy an internal an antenna for the set top box to work. Joy

Joy

Joy, very simple, think of Digital TV as the same as normal TV, you need a good reception. If you are not in a great area you need an external antenna, if you are in an good area, an internal antenna would suffice.

Really, you need to get it and see!

Hi Trevor,

Thanks very much for the advice mate, much appreciated - I did get a second copy of that program for my mate's computer, and happy to say it fixed it just fine!

Just a reply to Tony with the cd/dvd player, if he doesn't mind voiding the warranty he can open the unit up and give the laser lens a clean with a cotton swab. Not too much though or he'll end up scratching it which will render the unit completely useless.

Tony, load a CD or DVD into it, and tilt the player so it's at a 45 degree angle while it's facing you. If it reads the discs fine while it's at an angle, the laser head is misaligned and will need to be corrected. I have heard many stories of the laser head also sticking which makes the player either not recognise or play the disc correctly. The laser head is on a rail. VERY gently shift the head along the rail up and down a few times. When you turn it on next, the head will return to it's usual position and attempt to read the disc. If it's okay after that, you have a sticky laser head rail - clean and lubricate with anything BUT wd40.

Also check the discs you're trying to play - some laser heads are more fussy than others and it's possible you have (a) badly scratched or fingermarked discs, (b) using recordable discs where the burn speed was set too high for the machine to interpret correctly, or (c) a unit that's had a lot of discs put into it over time.

Hope this helps, sorry it's long.

Hi Trevor,

My sincere thanks to you for the solution for Mac users wanting to get onto the Optus Wireless Broadband service. The HUAWEI E220 software for MAC OSX installed free of complications. I'm On-The-Air!

One question, perhaps unrelated, but strangely coincidental. My hotmail account is now inoperable! I use Safari and have also attempted Mozilla Firefox. No go. I can enter my Hotmail email program, but all attempts to reply to mail or send new mail only ends in the following:

"Network Error

A temporary network error occurred while trying to retrieve the requested URL.
Please try the following:

Please click the
Refresh button, or try again later."

Neither "refresh" nor "trying again later" work!

Any suggestions?

Kind Regards.
Terry

Hi Terry, Good to hear you got going.. but I wonder what the problem is.

I'd suggest you check your DNS Settings - that may have something to do with the Hotmail problem.

It seems unlikely the Optus setup would mean hotmail wouldnt work - ALSO, try just going to www.live.com - that's the new name for Hotmail.

Hope that helps.

Hi Trevor,

Late 2007 on the chips4brains shop you did mention removing Vista on a laptop and installing β€œXP”.

Recently I purchased an Acer running Vista Basic, which does a backup onto β€œD” drive, which is a partition on β€œC” .

At present the laptop has a 80gig hard drive, but when you check the properties of β€œC” and β€œD” they are 34 Gig and 33 Gig respectively. Some 13 Gig short?

If I remove Vista and install β€œXP” what happens to the β€œD” partition.?

I do have legal copy of β€œXP”

Hi Trevor
I have had a very bad and frustrating week on the Internet trawling through the dozens of e-Retailers now resident in Australia, looking for new system components to upgrade my current PC.
One stood out as the worst of the worst. Ozdirect.com.au.
The prices were good, and the delivery was in the ball-park of two days to Qld.
I purchased a new Gigabyte Quad core motherboard, and an AMD Phenom processor. This was last Frisay week.Their ads claimed that the goods would be despatched 'within 4 hours" of payment.
The processor didn't turn up until last thursday; without the motherboard - even though the delivery docket showed 2 items.
I spent the next 4 days trying to unravel just what had happened to item 2 with the transport company, who, had claimed that both items had been delivered.
I went back to the Ozdirect company, and discovered that thay had not sent item 2 at all.
Finally, it took a further 4 days before I finally rreceived my motherboard. And for all this "attention" I had to pay a credit card levy of 31/2% for the privilage.
The cheapest price is not always the best bet where e-tailers are concerned. Buyer BEWARE!!!

Does anyone know what I can do about a Windows XP machine that pauses for 10 seconds out of every 30 seconds or so? I have no idea what's been causing this. It's happened on my machine and it was fixed by running Registry Mechanic by PC Tools where a lot of dead keys were erased, but a mate in the same week says the same thing is happening to his computer as well.

Both systems are running legitimate copies of Windows XP Home Edition. I don't have a multi-user licence in order to run Registry Mechanic on his PC so that solution's out..anything else I can try on this guy's PC?

Cheers,
Frankster

Hmm... Frankster, what a pain.

I would first disable any unused programs, and do a good cleanup - ADD/REMOVE software - get rid of that which you do not want

That will help with the registry.

Then, you're certainly best getting another copy of that registry cleaner i would think - if it works, recommend it to your mate!

I started to fall off to sleep when you were talking about a set-top-box for an analog tv. I am not really up-to-date with all of this, I have a Panasonic (68cm?) TV which is over 15 years old, works like a gem, what does a set-top-box do?
I know that it has something to do with the future of digital and hd. I am into simplicity. Can you recommend one that would suit my tv.

Many thanks....Joy

Joy,

Sooner or later the current TV transmission systems will be TURNED OFF - so you will not be able to see ANY TV.... UNLESS you get a Digital TV, OR a Set Top Box for your Current TV.

If you are happy with your TV, pop into Harvey Norman, JB Hi Fi or any Electrical retailer and purchase a DIGITAL SET TOP BOX.

You'll get a great picture, and you're future proofed!

Wow Craig, sounds complicated.

I would have a chain of connections TV -> DVD HARDDRIVE -> DIgital Set Top Box.

The Digital Set top box should be COAX into the wall.

The DVD recorder should be RCA (the Red White and Yellow cords) to the Set top box, and the TV should be RCA to the DVD recorder.

Failing that, perhaps you need to boost your Antenna signal or get a new antenna?

BIOS Trouble

On boot-up after about 10 seconds a screen appears showing all drives detected, but down at the bottom it states :

CMOS Checksum Bad
Press F1 to run SETUP
Press F2 to load default values and continue

Pressing F2 does nothing but F1 brings up the bios and showed the date out of whack. (I thought it may be the CMOS battery but it checked out OK.) When I try to alter the date I cannot manipulate the cursor to the left so it stays at 2002. Also, although I can make other changes in the BIOS it will not accept any changes. (F10 save & exit) does not work and the final display shows "Discard changes" or "Cancel". - There's no way to Accept changes.

A quick google search, i found this site:
http://www.tech-faq.com/cmos-checksum-bad-error.shtml

This looks like good advice:

If you have encountered this error and would like to fix your computer, here are some remedies for each situation:

CMOS Battery Not Functioning Properly: If you suspect your CMOS battery is not functioning properly you can easily change it. Before changing your battery, reboot your computer to make sure that the error still exists. If it does, go into your CMOS and write down all of the settings. If all settings are lost, you can usually get them from your computer manufacturer. Now locate the battery and remove it, you might need to consult your computers manual or tech support to remove your battery. Take down the CMOS batteries information such as volt, size, etc. Once you have your new battery, you can replace it and reenter your CMOS settings. If your battery was the cause of the CMOS Checksum Bad Error, you should have remedied the problem.

Your BIOS has Been Updated (either by you or possibly a virus): If your BIOS has been updated recently, your CMOS settings may have become reset. Make sure that the values entered in the BIOS are correct or simply reset them to the default settings. If you believe that a virus updated your BIOS settings, run a virus scan and make sure that the BIOS settings are back to the default.

The Computer Was Shut Down Improperly: Sometimes when running MS Windows, if you shut down your laptop or desktop without first properly shutting down your operating system it will corrupt the CMOS settings causing the CMOS Checksum Bad Error. You can easily avoid this error by making sure that you completely shut down your computer before turning off the power. Usually this entails going into the Start Menu/ Turn Off Computer/ Shut Down. If you received the error, shut down the computer properly, if this is the cause of the error, the error message will not return.

Joy, i think there are some great simple units out there.

The Digiwalker Mio C320 is great, as is the Navman ICN330.

Basically, look for the cheap ones - they do BASIC A-B navigation. You don't need the bells and whistles right now!

Good luck, let me know what you do.

Lets assume you can print ok from internet and word for example.

I'd uninstall any plugins you might have running in outlook, then also look for an UPDATED printer driver.

if you do update the driver, be sure to REMOVE completely the old driver and printer then install.

Hey Frank.

Firstly, to assume you mean screensavers, not just background wallpaper, NO, you cant just add music.

However, there are plenty of programs out there that allow you to make a screensaver - that way you can make one perhaps with photos AND music...

Let me know how you get on.

i have uninstalled & reinstalled a few times but still no luck

Microsoft Greeting Workshop?

Sorry i dont use it.

However, a quick search online, it could be that it is not compatible with your current Operating System?

Can you open a BLANK document? If so can you then check for upgrades to the program?

There are some instructions from MICROSOFT at THIS SITE: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=284951

Try that, let me know how you go!

Thank you so much for being so informative. Problem with me is that I am usually in bed when listening to you and think "oh I'll remember that tomorrow". Guess what? very rarely do I. Last night you talked about defragmentation which reminded me to do so, which I have just completed but there was also another tip and that was with the computer being slow to start. You suggested MS and then I can't remember the next sequence. I would really appreciate it you could let me know so that I can speed up my computer. Thanks again for a very informative programme. Ok, START - PROGRAMS - SYSTEM TOOLS - DEFRAGMENT

That is it! Then choose your hard drive and ANALYSE - It will tell you what you need to do.

Set aside a bit of time, might take a while to complete.

Thanks

Trevor,

I am using outlook 2007, and even when I was using outlook 2003, there was no way I could find out how to permantley delete emails. You can delete them but, they still remain somewhere in the system. I have checked the before and after deletion on the hard disk and the used/free space remains the same.

Appreciate any help

Bernie

After you delete emails you should look in the tools or data file locations for COMPACTING your data files. They may need to be done first before the 'space' shows up.

Could you tell me if Creative Muvo vidz is an easy or difficult MP3 player to use. I am an older person but even my enlightened family have trouble understanding how it works. I am so disappointed that I have a major problem getting it to function. It seems to have so many menus that I don't know what I am doing. Should I have bought a simpler model. Bev

Creative i thought were rather easy to use.

However, even the iPod isnt EASY to use when you first get one - it takes some time to understand the logic of it all.

Hard to break it, so just PLAY with it, a lot, the more you use the more you learn.

Good Luck

Austin,

I'd think it is a driver issue - what format is the file you are trying to play?

Is this in Windows Media Player?

Try it in a couple - say WMP and also Quicktime - see if all do the same thing, could also be your PC a bit slow unable to show it all smoothly.

John, Not quite sure what is happening there, could be that the bookmarks/favourites list is not ATTACHED to the page. Look for a little pin marker for that.

Otherwise is there an arrow there to show more?

I spoke on last 'Chip 4 Brains' for '07 raising the issue of the massive price differences between HDMI cables. The arguement for extra shielding to stop interferrence affecting the signal doesn't hold water because HDMI is a digital signal and has much greater restistance to interferrence than an analogue signal especially over short distances between electronic devices such as TV's and DVD players etc.

Just Google the words... HDMI cable ripoff

I pity the poor punter who is faced with is extra cost 'cause the cables aren't included with the devices and faces being ripped off on their HDMI cable purchase.

Hi Trevor.
When you say it cannot be topped up does that mean that if you spend $39.95 on an item you lose the $10.05 change unless you can find something to that amount to purchase. If thats the case I would hate to deposit $500 with Vcard to buy something for $425 and then have to wait for something within $75 price range that i needed to purchase to save my losing my remaining deposit. Just while we are on the topic, when you say unix based, what is unix?

Unix is an operating system - LINUX is a Unix based system.

Thats a VERY simple way of looking at it, but think DOS and UNIX being different operating Systems - DOS lead to MS DOS and WIndows, UNIX to Mac and Linux.

Hi Trevor,
I just have a question about a computer I am going to attempt to build. I was looking at putting together a PC with one of the new Intel Core 2 Quad processors, and whacking 2 gigs of ram into it, but have had quite a weird thought about operating systems and what I want to use. Is it at all possible to load the Mac 10 leopard operating system onto a computer, and have it running in parallel with a Vista OS, keeping in mind that the computer was not built by Mac? I understand that you can put vista onto a mac, and I am curious about wheather it will work the other way around.

Keep up the fantastic work,
Andrew

Andrew, Simple answer, No.

I'm SURE there is some HACK out there, as MAC is Unix based, but certainly not a common way to go.

Sorry mate

Hi Trev,

Mate there is certainly software out there.

What you need to look for is a WINDOWS FAX to EMAIL program. I will have a look at some point for you, but a quick google search should help.

Basically you will need to connect your modem to the fax line, setup to receive all faxes, it will then receive them and convert them to email.

Works well - i must say I often wonder why this isnt a more used application?

Hard to tell really, i assume its a laser pointer (red light on the bottom), so i'd perhaps try another mouse as a test if you have a spare, failing that, go into CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, DEVICE MANAGER and remove the mouse from the device list. That will then uninstall it, when you reboot it SHOULD re-install - try to use a new driver from a CD or downloaded so you do not simply re-install the same driver.

Good Luck

Any issues with it, you should look to the video card manufacturer for support.

Many posts claim that it is spyware embedded in the program by a rougue employee of sapphire & should be removed. Others claim it is safe & is part of the CCC program. Would you know wether this is a legit program or spyware? Thanks...Derek

Sharon,

winsys32.exe is leftover from malware, or a virus.

It may have been 'cleaned' but a reference to it has been left.

I would download another spyware removal tool - ad-aware or similar to check for sure.

But after that you need to remove that reference from the REGISTRY - this is a very dangerous thing to do if you do not know what you are doing.

I recommend you find someone to help you with this. And BACKUP the registry before you do it.

# Click Start, and click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
# Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
# Navigate to the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
# In the right pane, delete the value

WinSys32 C:WindowsWinsys32.exe
# Exit the Registry Edito

Stan,

G'day, hope you continue to learn every day mate, thats the wonderful thing about computers!

MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER and MOZILLA FIREFOX are both 100% ok to have on your computer at the same time. These are known as BROWSERS, they allow you to VIEW WEBSITES.

GOOGLE is a WEBSITE - not a program.

However, any 'toolbars' that people want you to have, i personally ignore. Google Toolbar, Yahoo Toolbar, MSN Toolbar - they are all just ways of getting you to do more with them. Ignore them, uninstall them!

Good luck mate

Alex,

Re SAT NAV - excellent question mate.

There is no definitive Answer. I own a NAVMAN, and its the basic model ic330 or similar. Its great, simple and does just what i need.

I'm testing a MIO now, and it too is great, however MUCH more complex, in that it has MANY more features, it has businesses listed in it, bluetooth for your phone and much more.

What you need to decide first is WHAT DO WE WANT IT TO DO. If you want to replace your paper street directory, then go for something simple. Cheap and simple will get you there every time.

Ron, re the SCSI CD rom - could well be the mother board.

However, to install the driver without the CD - go to the manufacturer website, or search for it online, download, and install from the hard drive instead of the CD. If that doesn't make it work, it could be the mother board.

I have a Win 98 PC with a Scussi CD RW which is no longer recognised by windows but is OK in the BIOS. Control panel shows Yellow mark and states that PCI SCSI Bus Controller drivers are not installed.(code 38)

When I try to re-install driver it asks to insert the windows cd rom but the drive does'nt work !!

Not to be outdone, I installed another (IDE)CD Rom on IDE 2 (Master, no slave),and it too has a similar problem. It is recognised in explorer but in properties it says it is not accessible.

I have replaced the cable but no difference and also gone into the bios and it detects these drives as well as the scussi bus controller.

In hindsight I guess it would be a good idea to have the windows cd rom copied to a file on the hard drive so that I would not be dependent on the drives for such vital info & drivers.

Your comments would be most welcome.

Stan! Ahh the dreaded takeover of your PC by something you thought was going to make your life better!

Look, for you, first and foremost, go to ADD-REMOVE programs and get rid of the Registry Editor.

Then install and run some anti-spyware, like Ad-aware.

For others, the tip here, Windows comes with the programs you need.

Use them, regularly - clean Pc, Defrag PC, this will get you going.

On top of that, look for credible products like Norton 360 to help you improve your PC performance.

Remember, if it SEEMS to good to be true, it probably is.

Joy, To be honest i think you cannot go wrong with either Logitech or Microsoft wireless products.

What i would look for if you are using it on a Laptop is a LAPTOP/NOTEBOOK version - the desktop ones have a large 'dongle'.

Some tips.
Microsoft have a Wireless 5000 model which uses BLUETOOTH which if you have it on your laptop means you don't need need a receiver to plug into the laptop, just the mouse - that would be cool.

Bottom line, check the transceiver/receiver size - you need something that is portable and doesn't stick out too far!

Hi,
I have asked you for advice once before and it proved to be very helpful. Thank you. But now i have a problem of a different kind.
In my windows pictures where all my pictures are automatically sent when i download them, there have been pictures appearing that i have no knowledge of what so ever. They are all quite explicit and sexual in nature. I know they were not on my phone when i downloaded them and i think they came off the net some how. Some are titled 'you' and 'i want'
I have anti virus software and it is all up to date. Is there a way i could find out who it is? Or at least put a stop to it?
No one i know would send them to me in a email. I am really lost for thoughts and just want to know who it could be.
My 9 year old brother uses the computer and i would hate for him to come across any pictures like that. I know for a fact it isn't him doing it either.

Thank you.
Stacee.

Austin,

The payment system i referred to on Thursday night's show was VISA's new VIRTUAL CARD - www.virtualvcard.com.au

The system allows you to buy a 'VISA' card using bpay or at MOBIL/QUIX service stations, and the card is valid until it runs out.

It cannot be topped up, you just get a new one!

Great system..

Enjoy

Trevor.
On Brians CHIPS FOR BRAINS, show Thursday night last you mentioned a card of a limited amount to spend which could be acquired giving you accessibility to purchase things on the net. I know Brian has spoke about this type of credit card for some years and it would suit me as well. Could you please give me more details as to where I may purchase this card either by Email or next Thursday night on 2GB's Brian Wiltshire show. Thanking you Austin

I've performed a big oops and accepted the download of those cute incredimail icons and they have now become a pain in the butt. My attempt to remove the program created more dramas and I had to restore the computer to an earlier date to counteract this. Consequently, they are still there. Can you offer me a safe and sure way of getting rid of all the incredimail files that have taken over the internet and email files. I only open up the internet in Google home page and my email in outlook express to avoid the icons. Trend Micro hates them.

Hi! Trevor, I came across"Registry Smart"by accident and, with some of the problems I was encountering ,like ,"Error with a program having to be closed down , Registry's offer to clean up my computer seemed like the answer to the problem. Before doing anything I checked it out on Mozilla ,What seemed to be someone actually wising me up to a possible calamity, turned out to be promotional material from

Hi, I have a problem which seems pretty basic but I can't solve it. Whenever I print an email from Outlook Express, even though the print preview looks fine, about 5 characters on each line down one side of the document are cut off. The same thing happens when printing from the Internet. I am using Cable Broadband and have Windows Express and my printer is an HP Deskjet F300.

Trev,
Murray had a lovely woman who still wanted to share her memories, i.e. slides, with her family but, did not have a slide projector that worked. I thought if she could borrow one you could explain how to project them onto a wall and then take a digital photo of them. She could then e-mail them or you could explain to her how to make a power point slide show.

I work in an electronics-rich environment, where GSM phones are banned because of the signals they emit when "phoning home", which gets into the electronics and is heard as a distinctive noise.

By contrast, I can leave my CDMA phone switched on and suffer no interference problems from it.

However, Telstra is switching off the CDMA service early next year, which means I have to look at another phone.

What are the new NextG and 3G phones like in this regard? Can I leave them switched on when I'm at work, or will I have to switch them off?

Thanks Trevor for your quick response But I have tried both changing batteries and pushing the receiver and mouse buttons and it is better for a little while then starts to play up again. What I find confusing is that it does not do it while I am not on line. Any further ideas.

To uninstall Yahoo Internet mail - assuming you have installed that as a notification program.

Goto START >> CONTROL PANEL >> ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS >> look down the list for YAHOO INTERNET MAIL and click REMOVE

Easy!

Patrick, with regards to cd and dvd's for photos - there are LOTS of solutions - Windows Movie maker is probably on your PC, try it.. Otherwise search around, i don't personally have any recommendation - perhaps others will?

I know my Uncle swears by one, i will get the name of that one for you!

Alan,

To update your drivers you need to do a couple of things.

1/ WINDOWS UPDATE - do this often.
2/ Visit the website of the manufacturer of your hardware, be it compaq or the cards and hardware itself. Look for the most recent driver.

Download, install and off you go!

Once the flash drive is connected to your PC it is in essence a Hard drive (E: F:), perhaps look at my LINKS page and use the PRINT DIR function to print out the contents of the drive?

Beverley, re your Wireless mouse - the first and most important thing you can do is install NEW BATTERIES in your mouse.

Also, you should 're-connect' it. Normally you do that by pushing a button on the receiver, and then on the mouse.

Give that a try.

Just a little searching and e mail from friends. My problem is that the pointer arrow recently started to drop to the left bottom of the screen & stops on the screen also the left click has to be pushed numerous times to work. This seems to be only when I am on line. I have moved the modem away in case it was that but no luck. Hope you can help as being an oldie, I do not know who else to ask. Thank You

Hi Trevor,
Need a little help.
I went in to play online games at bigfish and got a message "Javascript is needed to play games". I was playing them quite happily the day before. The only thing I can see that may have happened is that shockwave updater is now showing on my tool bar. Question one How do I get rid of the ShockWave updater.
Question two How do I fix the problem with the java script?
I have looked into advanced internet options and under Java (sun) The box is ticked and also reads "use Java 2v1.4.2_03 for <applet> (requires restart)"
Is this the problem and how do I restart?

Hope you can help. Enjoy your program on Thursdays.

Hello Trevor, I truly enjoy your comments each week and wondered if you could maybe help me with a frustrating PC hurdle I have. I have an HP with XP2. I convert lots of music tracks to MP3 then send them to flash drive sticks or memory cards. I have the wish to be able to check out the loaded programs on any of the flash drives or memory cards and this is not a problem in "My Computer" but ultimately I want to be able to do a print-out of each program for my own convenience. Each listed title is always headed by the Windows Media Player icon and this apparently prevents any print-out of a program list. I've tried all ways I can think of to try and get the print-out to work but to no avail. Please tell me there is a way and show me how to get there. I'll appreciate any helf you can give me.

Ken.

Cheryl,

I’m not sure what you mean? On the CAMERA it says file is corrupt?

Does it say that for all the images? Or just one?

You should still sync it up and download the pictures, it could be just that one image, but also, it could be the card, you may need to FORMAT the card in the camera once you get the photos off, that will give it a clean slate to work on.

Let me know

re your USB Flash drive - assuming you have those photos on your computer, i think the safest thing to do is FORMAT the drive.

Plug it in, right click the drive, and FORMAT.

That will get rid of any virus issues!

Recently I took my USB Memory Stick to a Photographic shop to have some hard copy photos made. In so doing, the shop operator (I think) infected my Memory Stick such that when I plug it in and double click on the USB (F) drive I have an ALERT dialogue appears which reads, "Windows cannot find 'sys.exe'.Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. To search for a file, click Start Button and then click Search"
I have followed the instruction but no joy.
Can you help.
Note: I can access the USB memory stick by highlighting the F drive and going to File-Open.

Tim, if you want to do a complete clean up there are a few steps.

1/ BACK UP EVERYTHING - Documents, Favourites, Mail, addresses etc!
2/ Make sure you have the registration info, cd or file download for ALL your software.
3/ Make sure you have a valid WINDOWS disk and KEY, OR the 'CLEAN INSTALL' cd that came with your PC.

Then once you have that its as simple as putting in that clean install CD, or WIndows CD, booting up to the CD. Go through the options and choose the FORMAT option when installing - this WIPES EVERYTHING FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE and starts all over again.

Then once done you have the painful task of re-installing all your programs and getting back your data!

Good luck!

Izaz,

Frankly, i don't think you should build a website unless you have the core HTML knowledge. If you do want to take on the challenge, then look at Dreamweaver as an option, it is at least more advanced and less weighed down by Microsoft's formatting issues in Front Page.

Of course, if you want a place to share notes, entries, blogs and photos... Grab a Familysite - www.familysite.com.au

We're selling them for just $250, just launched, including your own domain name!

Peter, Digital Radio will launch in Australia in 2009.

There is currently NO RADIO in production that will allow you to listen to that broadcast. Any current Digital Radio you have or can purchase now will NOT work in the new DAB+ system.

The current Digital Broadcasts are 'trials' and when shut down soon, they will be replaced by further trials of the new encoding (DAB+), and new radios will be required.

I'll keep you posted.

Greg,

Thanks for your comments mate.

Community Radio is heavily regulated... so move on from that idea...

What you should consider as a starting point is a podcast!

Record a show (any audio program), make a podcast (there is some great software out there to do that) and get it into iTunes and other great podcast directories... and tell your mates and neighbours!

Good luck - let me know the link if you get to do it...

Yolanda, sounds interesting.

I must say my gut instinct is to NOT trust these online survey things.

HOWEVER, like you say, some do pay money.

SO, my advice - 1/ Never put your FULL NAME (middle name etc)
2/ NEVER put your Date of Birth
3/ NEVER put your ADDRESS
4/ Setup a new email account, gmail.com or yahoo.com.au perhaps, and use THAT only for surveys, that way you wont clog up your personal account.

Good luck

Kerrie,

Re Google ads, there is no security concern there at all. Google ads simply display within the pages based on text WITHIN the page. So what that means is that google reads all my pages, and displays ads within them that try to β€˜match’ the content on them. Simple as that.

Search the web for the best answers, using the exact mother board model number and such.

Quite possibly it could be that another peice of hardware is failing.

Could be RAM, or Hard Drive, Also check all the connections, take them out, put them back in, to be sure they are all secure, could be loose...

Running old Athlon 700 on Epox MBd. 1G Ram. Lately has been hesitant to load windows 98SE sometimes needing up to 10 attempts but to-day it would only go into safe mode so I did a scandisk & it showed no problem. I then Changed the CMos Batt. while still on, to hopefully save cmos data, but on Re-booting it would not even boot into the BIOS but it gives a longish beep about every two seconds with the screen showing "No Input". The useless Epox MBd manual gives no indication of what the beeps mean.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Trevor,
I have two questions for you but firstly I listen to Brian most evenings. This prompted me to e mail you.
I brought a HP desk top computer a year ago.Unfortunately,I have no one about me who is able to help if I need it.I am only able to send e mails and use the basics on the internet.
I am wanting to know if you are able to recomend a very good computer person who would come to your home to give the odd lesson.I did attend a computer course but prefer a one on one.
Secondly,I wanted your opion on service providers.I got broad band (Telstra)with the two year contract the first 9 mths at half price. My land line is with Telstra and I wanted to have all billing packaged together.I will be operating a business from it in the next 8 mths.Do you think I could have got a cheaper deal and if so can I change without incuring a fee?
Sorry this is not more condensed than this.

Enjoy listening to you on 2GB. Perhaps you could help me. I have a NEC analogue tv and a DVB set top box with recording facilities.Sometimes it works perfecly but at other times the interruption to the audio is very bad, up to 15 seconds every minute or so at its worst whether I am watching a live show or playing a recording.
Could it be interference from a neighbour's computer which I have suspected because of the times when kids are home from school, or do you have any other suggestions.
I have had the aeriel checked and they don't seem to think they can improve it.
I bought the box from my son-in-law and don't want to complain too much. If I had bought it from a shop would be taking it back as it is extremely annoying. Would greatly appreciate your views.

Patricia, to unsintall Yahoo mail, which i assume is appearing as an application on your PC, goto START >> CONTROL PANEL - then ADD and REMOVE PROGRAMS.

Once this list is populated, click on YAHOO MAIL and click REMOVE.

All done!

George,

To Clear the Contents of the My Recent Documents Folder
To clear the My Recent Documents list, follow these steps:
1. Right-click Start, and then click Properties. Or, if the Start menu is already displayed, right-click an empty area of the Start menu, and then click Properties.
2. Click Customize.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Under Recent documents, click Clear List, click OK, and then click OK. Your most recently used documents are removed from the My Recent Documents folder. Note that this action does not delete the documents from your hard disk.

Just thought I'de ask about this. It has me stumped. I am using Vista 64bit and when I try to install the drivers for my graphics card (because Vista's are just not good enough) from Gigabyte Vista tells me that the drivers are not digitally signed. Is there a way of turning off this security? Btw I am 15 and have installed three care computers 2 desktops in a farm car of mine (which failed miserably) and a laptop in a prado (which is working). I have created a diary at http://bigredbrick.info . Also for those who really can't be bothered to create a huge website or lack in experience open source cms systems are GREAT (http://opensourcecms.com). Thanks.

Vince, you need to RIGHT CLICK on the link, and SAVE AS. That is the best way to SAVE the file.

Enjoy!
