27 Nov 2007 - Installation of new software
So, here's an interesting difference.

When you install new software, it creates a new disk partition from which to install it onto your Hard Drive. Once installed, you then need to COPY that application INTO the "Applications" Folder on the "Macintosh HD".

Once that's done - you can eject the "temporary partition".

Strange stuff.  Not sure why it doesn't copy the application to the application directory and eject that partition as part of the installation program.

Anyway, now i've worked that out, I'm good to go!

Some programs have a installer some don't, It's not a partition but a virtual disk image. When you download a program ( i.e. Firefox ) you will down load a dmg file ( which you can use Disk Utility to burn to a cd ) that is self contained.

double click on the dmg file and you will mount the virtual disk contained in the dmg file.

You can drag the application to where ever you want to use it ( /Applications or ~/My Apps/ or /Users/Shared/ where ever you heart desires ) then you can eject the images and don't forget to trash the dmg file. They can take up quite a lot of space.
