29 Nov 2007 - Quitting Programs!
So here's another annoying feature of the Mac - Annoying that is for a PC user trying to convert.

When a program is open, and active, it shows up in the top bar, say for exampl WORD - it shows WORD - File/Edit/View etc

So thats easy to get.

Then underneath that, in the blank open space, is your active Document.

Now, like Windows, Mac's have three window buttons - Minimise, Maximise/Restore and Close.

So, I'm finished typing, and I click the little red X, for CLOSE. Done.

BUT, WORD is still running!

Because you need to QUIT the program.  Click WORD up in the top menu, and choose QUIT program, or the Apple Key and Q

A little annoying, but the load on the system from having extra programs open seems minimal, so why do i care!? i don't know.

Another way to quit is to put the mouse cursor over the icon in the dock and hold the mouse button down. You will get a pop up menu where you can select "Quit".

If you then hold the Option/Alt key down, "Quit" will change to "Force Quit" which can help to kill a stubborn program.

If you notice in the Dock, any active application has a black tick under it.

I suggest not hiding the dock that way you can keep on top of what applications are running.
