| 22 Jan 2008 - Almost two months on... |
 |
Almost two months on, I can now be sure that I would, if all the moons were aligned, convert to a Mac.
Without doubt.
I find the MacBook Pro to be reliable, easy to use, fast in general use and fast on boot/shutdown.
Leopard really does have all the spots - the dock for programs is fantastic, the time machine software will prove extremely useful and general use is very difficult to complain about.
There are little annoyances still, but frankly they seem to be more program based not operating system based - like Firefox - why on a mac, when you click the address or URL does the cursor simply place itself in there, on a PC by default when you click up there it highlights the whole address allowing you to delete it all and write a new one.
Searching for files is simply mindblowing, on a PC i've needed to install Yahoo or Google desktop search to be sure I am finding my files. On a Mac, click the hard drive, type a word and the search goes off. Wonderful stuff.
I think by far the reliability and speed of this laptop are what impress me most.
Perhaps I should look at using a desktop iMac in the future.
Final Cut Pro is a fantastic video editing program, better and easier than Adobe Premier Pro, and the DVD Studio Pro makes DVD making simple - never before have I been able to burn a DVD so easy - and i've downloaded and purchased plenty of PC programs for that. Often they work well but the wirting process fails.
Apples control over every screw and wire in these things means you aren't just adding bits and peices which CAUSE those problems like writing a DVD or memory errors. This is where Apple have it right.
But is all that is well and good, but is it worth the money?
Apple's come at a premium, no-one seems to argue about that.
If you make the decision to PAY that premium you also need to make the commitment to change. It is NOT an easy process. In all honesty, I think it was 3 weeks before i felt comfortable with the operating system, so it could be a very frustrating time after parting with the cash.
I would highly recommend a Mac to anyone purchasing a new computer. IF they have the patience and ability to embrace something new.
The move from XP to Vista is NOT as extreme as the move from Windows to Mac.
More to come...
