Radio and television personality, Stan Zemanek's year-long battle against cancer is over.
Stan, who celebrated his 60th birthday on May 29 this year, passed away peacefully at his Sydney home today at 2.45am surrounded by his family, wife of 30 years, Marcella, daughters Melissa (31), Gaby (36) and her husband, Simon Hunter. He leaves behind two beloved grandchildren, Hamish (4) and Chloe (5 months).
His wife, Marcella said:
"We have lost a remarkable husband, father and grandfather and Australia has lost a genuine icon. Stan put up an incredibly brave and dignified fight this past year and he was buoyed and greatly comforted by the expressions of love and warm wishes we received during this protracted battle.
"The whole family thanks his many fans, colleagues and friends for their love and support."
Stan was diagnosed with a Glioma Grade 4 malignant brain tumour in May 2006 and immediately underwent an operation performed by respected surgeon, Dr Charlie Teo.
Stan put up a brave and courageous fight against the disease, continuing his 14 year career as night time presenter on Radio 2UE until ill health forced his early retirement on December 18, 2006.
Stan played a significant part in the success of Radio 2UE, 3AW and 4BC. He is the only radio personality to have achieved the No.1 ratings position in the Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane markets.
Stan joined 2UE as assistant producer of the John Laws Morning Program in 1978. It was there he met and fell in love with Marcella, who was a researcher on the program. Stan was appointed 2UE's night time presenter in 1989, a position he held until 2000. He then went to 2GB mornings for a year and then 3AW Melbourne Drive program for a year before returning to 2UE nights in 2003.
Despite the impact the tumour was having on his life, Stan demonstrated his love of performance when he continued recording episodes of the highly successful battle of the sexes panel show, Beauty And The Beast for FOXTEL and AUSTAR's W Channel, a highly successful series he hosted for 10 years. The final episodes of the current series were filmed in late May this year.
Stan's legion of fans will remember a loveable, outspoken, opinionated trailblazer who changed night time radio in this country - a man who dedicated his life to his great loves - radio and television and his family.
The Funeral will be held on Tuesday at North Sydney's St Mary's Catholic Church. The Zemanek family says colleagues and fans will be welcome at the service, which will begin at 10.30am (AEST).
Instead of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Cure For Life Foundation.
