| 01 May 2008 - Grand Theft Auto - what's all the fuss about? |
 |
I used to LOVE Grand Theft Auto - one of my favourite games.
Back then, there were no 3d views or first person shooting, this was a sattelite view of the city and you drove around completing tasks.
Still today the game allows you to drive around like any normal joe without getting into strife - and that's fun. I look forward to giving it a go online, Midtown Madness was great for that on XBOX live!
The controversy though is about the level and type of violence.
Game makers would prefer we had an R rating here in Australia to allow Sexual Violence to be included - there are reportedly scenes where you are asked to seek revenge on a rape, and the whole thing is just sickening to even consider.
Just leave it out. I'll admit I do love first person shooters - its an interesting role play.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow six is wonderful for the 'war' style shooters, and the old Soldier of Fortune was great for real life experience style shooters.
But taking GTA4 to the extent where sexual violence is included is just stepping way to far over the line.
What they SHOULD be doing is making a non violent version - one where you can experience the graphics and animations of this game, completing tasks like 'getting the kids to school without running a red light' or 'pickup milk for your wife on the way home' - all a bit lame though for hard core gamers!
