27 May 2008 - I hate Sudoku - But ECHOCHROME I could love!
I don't play a lot of games. I did love Gran Tourismo 5 Prologue, and Grand Theft Auto, but I don't own a PS3, and my old original Xbox (I lined up at Midnight the NIGHT it was released) games just dont cut it all of the time. Plus, my time down in the lounge is something I normally spend watching a few select TV shows.
I'm not one to lie in bed or sit in the backyard playing Sudoku - I'm just not smart enough it seems.
But get this - a new game called ECHOCHROME - for the Playstation PORTABLE.
Leaving aside what a fantastic portable gaming device this is, how's this for a description - a game with no violence, no guns, no language, and it requires THOUGHT.
I can't begin to explain.
Remember Lemmings? I used to love that game - you had to think about what little guys to send where and how. Then there are mazes - thought required there too.
Echochrome is nothing like that, but its the closest I could think of!
This is a small stick figure, you don't control IT, you control the world around it.
It walks along beams, and if it reaches a gap will turn and walk backwards. How to bridge the gap - you can't jump!
What you do is move the map so that another beam is covering the gap - because in that perspective you can't see the gap - so if you can't see it, it doesnt exist - imagine that!
Same for holes you drop through or jump points. If you want to use them, move the map so where you land is where you placed the map - cover them up to avoid them.
I nailed the three levels in the demo, 15 minutes. Took some thought.
I've searched the net for some more screenshots, I found those below, plus this video from youtube.
I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a retreat, something to take their mind off the world, something to pass time perhaps. Certainly something for those wanting to work their mind.
