03 Jan 2009 - A very Skype Christmas
I get a lot of random press releases, often about products or services I don't really think are all that worthwhile..

Early in December (last year!), I received the results of a study (read: survey), commissioned by SKYPE.  I assumed it would tell me that billions of people are Skyping over the Holidays..

Nope, Landline phone calls were still the king for Christmas Communications.

% of Australians that use the methods of communication*
 Landline  66
 Email  65
 Cards  52
 Mobile phone 46
 Mail / parcel delivery 32
 Instant messaging 29
 Social networking sites 15
Online voice / video calls 13

So, there you go 'skyping' is done by 13% of Aussies..

However, when thinking about it, that's a LOT of people... add to that the GLOBAL usage and it's pretty amazing.

But here's where it got me.

My Brother-in-Law has been traveling the world for six months or so, and was in Panama on Christmas Day. So what did the out-laws do?  They organised a SKYPE call.

We hooked up the laptop, waited, and then just after Christmas Lunch, the late night Panama skype call came in.

Huddled around the laptop the whole family got to say hi, and his Mum and Dad were just glad to see him.

It IS quite amazing how technology can bring people so much closer together...  It's not going away, might be time to start embracing the technology perhaps!
