We're aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a number of users. This problem occurred at approximately 1.30AM Pacific Time. We're working hard to resolve this problem and will post updates as we have them. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused.

Stay tuned... but consider how reliant we are becoming on OTHERS for our essential services... anyone think that's a worry?

(UPDATED:)

Update on Gmail

2/24/2009 07:29:00 AM
The Gmail outage that affected many consumers and Google Apps usersworldwide is now over. Users should find that they’re able to accesstheir email now without any further problems.

Before you can access your Gmail, you may be asked to fill in what’scalled a ‘CAPTCHA’ which asks you to type in a word or some lettersbefore you can proceed. This is perfectly normal when you repeatedlyrequest access to your email account, so please do go through the extrastep – it’s just to verify you are who you say you are.

The outage itself lasted approximately two and a half hours from 9.30amGMT. We know that for many of you this disrupted your working day. We’re really sorry about this, and we did do everything to restoreaccess as soon as we could. Our priority was to get you back up andrunning. Our engineers are still investigating the root cause of theproblem.

Obviously we’re never happy when outages occur, but we would like tostress that this is an unusual occurrence. We know how important Gmailis to you, and how much people rely on the service.

Thanks again for bearing with us.

Hi Trevor.

I had a problem with Yahoo on approximately the llth February - message came up that service is temporarily unavailable "not my computer but their service".

I've also had a problem with Firefox crashing on me and have been trying to find out if others have been having this problem or is it just me!

Is it true that the WEB is getting overloaded and can't cope?

Enjoy your newsletters. Cheers, Marguerite

Yahoo don't have the size of users Google does, but its still a major issue.

Then again, we forget that for some reasons, even Australia Post are delayed, some in some way or another this is just an extension of existing life issues! - We just become so reliant, we find it hard to accept problems.

As for the web getting overloaded. Yeah, I guess it could, and is. But it's more about the end user. I go to some sites now that on a dial up modem would take 10 minutes or more to load. How is that fair, or smart. You don't build shops that require you to walk slowly past everything but not see the full product for 5 minutes. Consideration MUST go into WHO is using the sites, not JUST how fancy it can look...
