| With over 65,000 Apps available, and more developers jumping on the bandwagon by the day, it's hardly a surprise that the Apple 'App Store' is the most popular mobile application portal going round. They didn't invent the concept, but they mastered it. For years you've been able to go to specialised sites where you could get applications for your mobile device, but Apple truely integrated the store into the phone, and their iTunes software making it something special. Today Apple announced that customers have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications in the first year. “The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.” The App Store is also available in 77 countries which in itself helps widen the download potential. Blackberry for example are still yet to expand their 'App World" globally Apple says there are over 40 million devices capable of running apps from the App Store sold and in the marketplace. It's a big lead they have, but I'm not sure it's one that needs to be chased down. Certainly though, they've set the benchmark for quality and service in this area. |
