29 Sep 2007 - iPod TOUCH ARRIVES
The good folk at Apple have sent me an iPod touch to have a look at, and given we have not officially seen the iPhone in Australia yet, the 'touch' experience is one a LOT of people will be keen to have - a real hands on look at what its all about.

This is hour 1 of operation, so I will update this over the coming days, but let me tell you, Apple have a nack for getting things right, and they have certainly done it again.

I doubted the TOUCHSCREEN interface and how it would really work - and how good could the motion sensor really be to know which direction to show the video or cover art in..

Well, its outstanding, it really is smooth to touch, simple to use and mind-blowing unique.  How is it no-one else has this technology?

I've taken a few snaps to show different things, but for now - one possible gripe - I cant seem to ADD a calendar appointment.  I can add contacts, but not calendar appointments.. perhaps a little research outside of this first hour might prove me wrong!

Music, Video, Photos (the zoom and slide functions there are amazing), stop watch, iTunes, Internet (wifi required - havent got that running yet!), contacts, calendar, calculator, clock, stopwatch, timer.. This is an amazing device...

Update: 2.10pm

Having now spent a few more hours playing with the Touch, I continue to be impressed, EXCEPT for that ridiculous inability to add calendar events ON the actual device.  I don't think it's a deal breaker for the majority - unless you are looking to move from a non phone pda device to the iPod Touch.  Surely someone will release a software update - one would hope APPLE will do that.

I've not had time to use the Safari Internet browser via WiFi.. excellent stuff, FULL SIZE websites which you can zoom in on to get detail as you like, it works really well, much much better than having all the images and data squashed up into a small width, this browser shows all the detail in a true browsing experience.  I've only found one thing so far that hasn't worked, and it's a javascript based editor I use here on my website (I was keen to actually write this from the Ipod), but that is nothing major.    Certainly takes some used to having to zoom in on a site to access some of the smaller links and such.

The Safari experience is very good, you can even have multiple windows open at a time, and switch between them.

Onto the music store - works VERY well, simple search click and buy - I haven't been able to actually purchase a song yet, because this device came pre-configured with someone else's account as default, and I don't know that password, which leads me to my second TINY gripe - you cant choose which account you buy from, that is set in iTunes and sync's over to the device.

And, the other big icon - YOUTUBE - again easy to search, and view, quite remarkable really.  I'm watching video's I've made, and uploaded to youtube.

Remember though, Youtube is POOR QUALITY - and that will continue here until bandwidth worldwide increases and youtube up their encoding rates.  (for the same reason I can't imagine watching youtube videos on Apple TV in the loungeroom)

This really is a device you need to hold, touch and experience before you can truly appreciate what it has to offer.

The 8 Gigabyte iPod touch retails at $419, the 16 Gigabyte at $549.

October 3 - So, it's been a few days, and i am still loving the iPod touch. It's a headturner for sure.

Do I love more than just the gimmick? Yes.

Wifi is truely awesome, the the Safari Browser enables such fast and TRUE web browsing.  For some time now i've browsed the web on my Blackberry - never again, its a distorted view of things.

This allows the full site to be seen, zoom and read the bits you want most.

YouTube is a great thing to have on here, in fact i think i browsed more Youtube with this than i do normally online, the quality is ok, if your WiFi isnt so good the buffering can annoy, and it will just spit you out if it stalls.

Videos look superb, and iTunes via the WiFi also simple wonderful - i want a song, i search, i buy, i listen - all on the device.

Setup and configuration for WiFi is too easy, simpler i'd say than normally with a PC, why - i dont know!

HOWEVER, i would suggest there is ONE problem which will be the big decision maker for people when comparing iPods - this is not a 'full music library device' - look at the new iPod Classic - 160GIG, thats all your music and photos for sure...

This one fits all my music, but not all my photos, and both will continue to grow.

16Gig is about the amount iPod lovers will need to look at and decide 'can i choose which songs i want on this device' similar to how we do with an iPod shuffle etc.... But really, 16Gig, thats a LOT of songs, the battery doesnt last that long so does it really matter!!!

Enjoy!

Looks good, how about an update at 1 week of usage.

There are rumours of a firmware upgade already.
