| 22 Nov 2007 - WORKSCENE MOBILE TRACKING - TENZENG |
 |
Is BIG BROTHER watching? Always!
Before you get freaked out reading this, remember, what I am about to describe to you is designed for businesses, small and large.
Imagine - using just a mobile phone - finding out where one of your sales team, or drivers are located.
As a fan of the TV show 24 - I guess I always figured the whole "triangulate" to find people based on them having a mobile phone on them was just a dream, a bit of CIA technology.
Turns out it is much more real than I thought!
A company called TENZENG has a product called WorkScene which, using mainly the Telstra NextG and GSM networks, but also other carriers, takes the signal strength of your phone at nearby towers, and determines your location within 200m, indoors or out!
This came to my attention through the MARK WEBBER CHALLENGE - a good mate of mine Greg Rust from Channel 10 took part in a bit of the Challenge last weekend, and now, through www.markwebberchallenge.com you can not only find out all about this amazing challenge which is put on for charity, but to LOCATE the teams!
The teams each have a ruggedised Telstra NextG phone (rugged only because of what they are doing, any phone will work), and as I say, using the Mobile network towers, they can determine their location and it's all displayed within a Google Map!
Away from the challenge, large fleet companies or companies with a sales force are adopting this technology to locate - not to track - but to locate their workforce.
But don't be concerned, the user has the ultimate power. Turn the phone off - that of course will put a stop to the tracking. Plus the user can turn on and off the tracking with a simple SMS.
Regardless of how it is applied, what gets me interested is the simple ability to DO this.
Going forward there will be many applications for this - a simple device could be installed in your car perhaps to easily locate it if it is stolen? I'm sure these things exist in many ways already, but the key here will be to make it affordable.
Interesting stuff!
