| 07 Jan 2008 - Best of 2007 - And to the looking glass for 2008 |
 |
In no particular order, here are my picks for some of the best technology in 2007.
- Google Aps
- A combination of major email server services, to compete with Exchange on a corporate level, plus online document usage, word, excel, powerpoint competitors, all with no installation and no storage on your PC. THIS is the future.
- Google Maps
- You can't argue that this is a wonderful system. Sat Maps, plus street maps, and in 2007 the USA got Streetview - looking at the location FROM the street. Search for florist or pizza and you're there.
- If you are on a mobile, install it and find your location to around a kilometer, based JUST on the mobile phone towers... plus, if your phone has GPS, pinpoint to 4 meters!
- Foxtel IQ Remote Record
- If you have Foxtel IQ - you MUST login and get a username and password for the foxtel TV guide. Doing so you can set your IQ to record programs from ANY PC, and now, ANY 3G mobile. Absolutely amazing stuff - this is top 3 stuff for me.
- Wii
- A fun and easy to use games system, not just for kids, for anyone. Try it out, you might just love it!
- iPod Touch
- The iPod itself is wonderful, The TOUCH makes the grade because it is so revolutionary, so different, so advanced in its User Interface. Just brilliant to use.
- Blackberry Curve
- Finally, a smaller form Blackberry with a full keyboard, plus a Camera - Take a photo - email it. and now also with GPS - so easy to find your location and find services around you!
- EeePC from Asus
- THe size of a couple of DVD cases, under 1kg and just $499. Simple easy to use Laptop for the kids, plus i think for anyone looking for an 'email machine'
- HD TV
- Despite what I say below, HD TV is amazing, its pure, clear pictures. If you are a purist, you should get into it. At a price though, and GET FULL HD!!
- Telstra NextG
- Telstra Cop a bagging in plenty of circles, for good reason sometimes, but for no reason more often than not.
- Next G IS a great TECHNOLOGY. They got done for their adverising, but that was frankly a technicality.
- Foxtel, Faster Internet, content, plus a great phone network - this is an amazing network the others will be racing to catch up to. If you are in the country - MAKE SURE you get a good country phone, that will offer you the BEST coverage possible.
The WORST of 2007
- Facebook
- Amazing, but useless. What a time waster - if you are a boss - BLOCK IT, stop people wasting YOUR time on THEIR time wasting site.
- Windows Vista
- If you don't have a new PC, do NOT upgrade. Stick with XP. If you are buying a new PC, get it to the RIGHT specifications and you will be on the wagon before the rest of us
- HD v Full HD Advertising
- Annoying that people THINK they are getting HD when they are not. If you want a futureproof TV look for FULL HD, not just HD - look for 1080 - its a number that will mean something to the sales person - if it's not 1080 - and you WANT the best, do not buy it.
Looking forward to 2008, I think there is a LOT to expect.
Firstly, the iPhone. I don't see Telstra picking it up until it can work on the NextG network - that is anticipated for mid year. Fingers Crossed!
Sat Nav systems with Traffic info - Inegrated Traffic info on your Nav system - coming in 2008... that will be great on the Roads.. Melbourne has it now, Sydney and Brisbane soon!
Google Streetview - should be showing Melbourne/Sydney and others by mid year.
Blackberry - expect an iPhone look alike with sleek front but similar screen and key layout to the Curve... Just an upgrade really, but hot looking.
Let me know what you think? Best and Worst of 2007? What are you looking forward to in 2008.
