14 Feb 2008 - The Underbelly online
I do find it interesting how the perception of the power of the Internet is all dominating..

You see, with the Victorian courts ruling that Underbelly not be shown by Nine in Victoria, nor screened online, the immediate reaction was along the lines of how fast the pirate copies would become available.

Question is, and this is my new v old media argument on a larger scale - does anyone really appreciate the Numbers we are talking about here?

In Melbourne, a good show will rate 350,000, maybe 450,000 viewers.  A hit show perhaps 600,000 or more.

So, the lack of Nine free to air coverage of the program means those numbers are not possible.

But then today you read things like: SMH: Ban scuppered as Underbelly goes online which tell us that "this morning already" 600 people have downloaded the show!!! WOW!!

This number does not indicate how many of them were IN Victoria, lets say 400, maybe 500.

How many of them are likely jurors?

Seriously, the ban by the courts for Nine means it will not be seen in Victoria.  Forget the few hundred, or even thousand who might KNOW and be ABLE to download it online - its a drop in the ocean.
